December 27, 2004: Christmas Eve at Penn Station
While I was waiting for my train at Penn Station at Christmas Eve, I decided to take some photographs of the hoards of people waiting around. All of a sudden, a man from the army, in full uniform and with a large gun hanging off his shoulder, came up to me and told me that I was only getting one warning to stop taking pictures... or else. I told him that I was not aware of any law that stated I was not able to take photographs, and that there was nothing posted anywhere stating that photography was prohibited. He didn't have much of a response, except that it did exist and that I was not allowed to take anymore.
In most situations, I would have no problem continuing to argue with someone over laws that do not exist (such as when bouncers in front of venues claim that you cannot wait in front while waiting for other people to meet up with). However, with the way things are now, I probably would have ended up being sodomized with the Iraqi detainees in Guantanamo Bay if I continued to argue. So instead I wished him a Merry Christmas, and thought how grateful I was that he cared more about me taking pictures of crowds than the crack dealing that takes place right outside of Penn Station.
