October 12, 2004: The Highline 1
This past weekend was Open House New York. Places in all five boroughs, usually closed to the public, were open for tours, informal talks and conversations with the designers.
When I lived in the Meatpacking District, I always wanted to see The Highline. It's a 1.5 mile, elevated railway that used to run along the West Side of Manhattan from the Meatpacking District to the Javits Center, that's been closed since 1980. When I read that it would be open for the weekend, I went there and waited 1.5 hours to take the tour.
