August 25, 2004: Howl
Howl, now in its second year, is the East Village's "County Fair." Basically, it is a week-long celebration of the East Village, pre-NYU gentrification (back when St. Marks place was more than a place to get bad Japanese food, Supercuts and "Farfrompuken" t-shirts).
As part of the festivities, on Saturday afternoon, organizers put a huge canvas around the perimeter of Tompkins Square Park, and invited the general public to paint it. I was pretty impressed with the diversity of the artwork - there was a little bit of everything.
