August 23, 2004: East Village Sunset 1
Saturday afternoon and evening was filled with very extreme weather patterns. In the morning, it was hazy and felt like it was 120 degrees with 200% humidity. Around 3pm, incredibly dark clouds rolled in faster than I may have ever seen, the wind picked up hastily, and it stormed for 3 hours. However, as quickly as the storm entered the area, it exited with same amount of speed - just in time for the sunset. The result: one of the most beautiful sunsets that I have seen in the area.
When I think of sunsets, I usually think of being in the mountains or on the coast. However, a New York sunset is beautiful in its own unique way: it illuminates the entire skyline, and pierces through each street and avenue. Eastern facing buildings radiate with incredible hues.
Equally amazing is the effect on those who witness these sunsets. Walking around, I noticed people everywhere - on streets, at outdoor restaurants, on apartment stoops, on park benches - pausing to stare and admire the sunset. It seemed like life was on hold, or at least in slow-motion, for 30 minutes.
