July 15, 2004: 2nd Avenue Laundromat
Rainy weeknights are perfect for a few things in New York: laundry, movies and chinese food. Last night, I partook in the first two.
You see a pretty diverse group of people at laundromats, especially ones in the East Village. Last night, while I was taking some pictures at my laundromat (a sure fire way to pass the time), I was questioned by some random guy. He asked me why I was taking pictures there; I really didn't have much of an answer for him. When I came back to pick up my laundry (I am not one to stick around and watch my things; if someone wants to steal my clothing, they can go ahead an enjoy it), he was busy folding his underwear, and asked me if I wanted to take a picture of him or his underwear. For some reason, I said no. My mistake.
A laundromat's bulletin board really does reflect the community that it serves. This one has advertisements for acting lessons, Photoshop tutoring (which I obviously need), yoga classes, a guitarist needed for a punk band, and a support group for women who "think they may be lesbians."
After laundry, we went to see "Some Kind of Monster," the Metallica documentary. While I am not a Metallica fan, I really enjoyed the movie. It was a really good documentary on group dynamics, and people's ability to deal with others only when they are able to honestly and openly communicate. Check it out.
