July 14, 2004: Shoot The Freak
When I first saw this "game" at Coney Island I was pretty amused. I mean, how hysterical is shooting paint pellets at some guy in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mask (I think this guy was Raphael) with a mere wooden shield as protection? Pretty funny, right?
Then I thought, without trying to sound as cliche as a college freshman, isn't "Shoot the Freak" the same game that led to plenty of deaths at Columbine? Do we really want to promote this kind of recreation amongst children?
[Unrelated: Last night's Soulive show at 6's and 8's was amazing. Seeing a band that usually plays at Bowery at a bar with no more than 125 people inside was quite an experience... especially since we were standing 3 feet from the band and were given free Red Stripes all night.]
